Now! 70 scorches to first week sales of 383,002, beating by just 243 sales the 382,759 copies that its immediate predecessor Now! 69 sold on its first week in the shops back in March. At the time that was a record for weekly sales, not just for the Now! series but for multi-artist compilations as a whole.

The achievement is made even more spectacular coming in a week where the top album, Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends recorded the lowest sale for a number one artist album for six years!
Viva La Vida already holds the record for the best sale of the year by an artist number one, selling 302,074 copies on its debut at the summit some six weeks ago.

It seems that the market leading compilation series will go from strength to strength, and with tracklistings like this, it's hardly surprising!

UK Albums Charts & Hot New Releases July 28th

Well, what an exciting week at the top of the chart this week!
In a close three-way tussle for chart supremacy at the top of the artist album chart, Basshunter - Now You're Gone, ABBA - Gold - Greatest Hits and Coldplay all took turns at topping the chart at various stages of the week.
Viva La Vida or Death & All His Friends eventually secured a return to #1 with sales of 26,205, the lowest total for a #1 album for more than six years, leading ABBA by just 363 sales, and Basshunter by 1,277.

Just two new entries in this weeks top 10;

Bachelors - I Believe; The Very Best Of (#7):
One of the things about buying compilations of hit songs from the 60's is that you never know if you will get the real deal until you put the CD on! There are a lot of re-recordings of Bachelors songs around, but the good news is, not on this new album from Decca/Universal. This package of 25 songs contains 23 original Decca singles, 17 of which made the top twenty.
All the massive hits are there, Diane, I Believe, Marie, No Arms Can Ever Hold You and more, but there are also some beautifully worked less well known songs for the purists.

Primal Scream - Beautiful Future (#9):

A Bluffers Guide To... Uriah Heep

So there I was listening to the new Uriah Heep album Wake The Sleeper and it reminded me of what a great band they were, so here my friends is the seventh of my short “Bluffers Guide to …” series!
Once again in a few short paragraphs here is all you need to know to bluff your way through a conversation on Uriah Heep as long as you steer away pretty quickly...

Uriah Heep are an English rock band that were first formed in 1969, when producer Gerry Bron invited key board player Ken Hensley to join a band on his own Bronze record label. They have been cited by many critics as being the forefathers of Progressive Metal music as their fusion of musical styles, melodic songs and multi part harmonising vocals moved the Progressive Rock of the time in a new direction.

The band were named after Uriah Heep who was a character in the Dickens novel David Copperfield, and their first release Very ‘eavy, Very ‘umble was a reference to his favourite saying, very ‘umble.

This first album was a heavy guitar and organ sound with theatrical vocals but it was not until their second album Salisbury that they started to develop the Progressive Metal sound that was to become their signature. It’s 16 minute title track included a 24 piece orchestra and introduced the fantasy orientated lyrical themes that would follow the band through their various formations.
In between their formation in 1969 and 1980 the band changed line up on numerous occasions but consistent in them were Ken Hensley on Keys and Mick Box on Guitar.
For most of this time they also had Gerry Bron on vocals until he was replaced in 1976. The peak of their recording during this period was 1972’s Demons & Wizards and The Magician’s Birthday.

In the late 1970’s and 1980 the releases favoured a more typical hard rock sound of that era and the replacement of vocalist Lawton for the Conquest album was not well received by most of the dedicated fans.

In 1986 the line up settled and the band still record and release some studio albums, Wake The Sleeper being the latest and more regular live albums, the latest being 2005’s Between Two Worlds.

They still regularly tour with the same line up making it now 22 years of gigging and recording and music spanning the last five decades, a very rare achievement for any band!

Although always popular in Europe the band never really made it big in the US but funnily have one of their biggest fan bases there now. Today they are huge in Scandinavia, Holland, Russia where they play stadium sized gigs, as well as in the UK.

Oasis bare their soul... Breaking News!

Oasis - New album to be titled: Dig Out Your Soul!

Well folks, October 6th is the date.
The long wait from the band who brought us two of the 1990's definitive albums, Definitely Maybe and (What's the Story) Morning Glory? is almost over. Their first new material since last years Lord Don't Slow Me Down from the on the road film, and their seventh new studio album, has been officially announced on the Oasis web site.

The album will be preceded by a single, 'The Shock Of The Lightning' on September 29th. Although the single penned by Noel and sung by Liam is unmistakeably Oasis, it may well represent the most recognisable Oasis song on the new album which is a different kettle of fish altogether.

Dig Out Your Soul will contain tracks contributed by all four members but principle songwriter Noel explains “I wanted to write music that had a groove; not songs that followed that traditional pattern of verse, chorus and middle eight. I wanted a sound that was more hypnotic; more driving. Songs that would draw you in, in a different way. Songs that you would maybe have to connect to - to feel.”
Recorded at Abbey Road Studios and mixed in Los Angeles the album sees Dave Sardy return to the producers chair following his work on their 2005 album Don't Believe the Truth, and will be the first release on their own Big Brother Recordings label. In tradition with most other Oasis album covers it features some stunning artwork.

Well it's all change at the top of the chart this week!
After five weeks at #1 Coldplay - Viva La Vida or Death & All His Friends has been knocked off the top spot, by a new entry!

Basshunter - Now You're Gone:
Although the second single 'All I Ever Wanted' did not reach the #1 spot as the first single, and title track from this album 'Now You're Gone' did, the album has matched the heights reached by the single, and in a closely fought battle has triumphed over Coldplay who had to settle for the runners up spot.
Basshunter, 23 year old James Altberg from Halmstad in Sweden, becomes only the third Swedish act to score a number one UK album the other two being Ace Of Base, and of course....... ABBA who are still featuring in this weeks chart at #5 with Gold - Greatest Hits no doubt riding high on the back of the Original Cast Recording of Mamma Mia, The Movie still in the top 20 at #19!!

Sharleen Spiteri - Melody:

Hop Down To The Farm

Vince Power has done it again and brought us a new mini festival that with a few tweaks could be a must add fixture to next years festival calender.
The Hop Farm is billed as a return to basics with a single stage, no sponsorship and few frills.

A grey start to the day was put to bed with a stirling performance of Leonard Cohen's - Hallelujah by the much stripped down Rufus Wainwright and as the sun broke through and brightened the sky up so did the days proceedings.

My Morning Jacket played a superb set and the crowd were getting warmed up for the bigger names to come, a typical Supergrass set, most of which I missed while queueing for the toilets (an ongoing disappointment of the day). I got back just in time to catch a great set by Primal Scream.

In March when I last saw Neil Young he wore a paint-splattered jacket and played on a stage resembling a ramshackle artist's studio, so some things don't change! But instead of opening with an hour of acoustic self indulgence, he crashed right in with what on another day might be his closing sequence - the rock epics 'Love and Only Love' (Ragged Glory) and 'Hey Hey, My My' from the great album Rust Never Sleeps. During the inevitable quieter section he sounded in great form, a superb gospel like version of 'Mother Earth' also from Ragged Glory was followed by 'The Needle and the Damage Done' and one of my favourite quieter tracks, Heart of Gold.
For the third part of his two-hour set, Young cranked it up again for more string bending, ear-bashing, guitar marathons. The senior citizen of rock played the longest version of 'No Hidden Path' (Chrome Dreams II) I have ever seen, sweating and almost beating his guitar into submission he left the stage. He returned for the encore, a fiery, fuzzed-up cover of the Beatles classic 'Day in the Life' (Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band).
Reminded me a bit of Jimi Hendrix.

UK Albums Charts & Hot New Releases

Staying firmly at the top of the UK album chart this week is the now familiar Coldplay - Viva La Vida or Death & All His Friends.
That's 5 weeks at the top spot and sales in excess of 1 million on both sides of the Atlantic. Viva La Vida has topped the charts in 36 countries around the world, beating Coldplay's previous record of 32 number ones for X&Y!

This week sees two new entries into the top ten;
Black Kids - Partie Traumatic as predicted by my good self last week is the highest new entry at #5. The band, much hyped last year, started life in 2000 as a Christian Ska Band. In their own words '..we wanted to make an album that had 10 singles on it..' They may just have done it!

Beck - Modern Guilt was another album hotly tipped by yours truly, and has hit this weeks #9 spot, not bad for the guy who has enlisted the assistance of Brian 'Danger Mouse' Barton in producing this fine record. The pairing shows a common interest resulting in a mixture of Psych-rock, Folk, Electronica and Orchestration.

A huge shout goes out to Lil Wayne who's Tha Carter III @ £6.99 (is also available as Tha Carter III (2CD Edition) @ £10.99) becomes the best selling album of the year in the U.S. returning to the top spot after being dethroned by Coldplay for just two weeks.
The album sold 156,000 copies to take the #1 spot, bringing its total tally to an amazing 1,682,000. Coldplay thus far have a total of 1,246,000.
If it was a 100yds dash then Lil Wayne would have it, but in a marathon run who has the legs?
