New release CDs out Monday July 14th with free delivery from CD WOW!

Sharleen_spiteri_melodySharleen Spiteri - Melody
This one is going for a song at Just £7.99!!
Sharleen Spiteri has sold a staggering 20 Million albums worldwide but this is her first Solo release, who is she? Well the lead singer from Texas of course! The band, not the U.S. state that is.... The album will of course have a familiarity about it as Sharleen's soulful voice guides you through a superb collection of Motown and 60's influenced stories, much like Duffy's - Rockferry actually except she (Duffy) is from Wales and Sharleen is of course from Glasgow.

The Hold Steady - Stay Positive
Steady!! Hold on to your hard earned cash and get this for a positive £7.99!!
This, the fourth studio album from The Hold Steady, is the follow up to the hugely successful 2006 release Boys And Girls In America. Check out the guitar solo on 'Lord I'm Discouraged'.... ROCK!!
The Guitar based American Pop Rocksters will be appearing at a Summer festival near you this very summer, if the rain ever stops and you can get to the field through the flooding that is...

New Release CDs out Monday July 7th

New release CDs out Monday June 30th with free delivery from CD WOW!

Beck_modern_guiltBeck - Modern Guilt
No need to feel Guilty at Just £7.99!!
Beck has enlisted the assistance of Brian 'Danger Mouse' Barton in producing this fine record. The pairing shows a common interest resulting in a mixture of Psych-rock, Folk, Electronica and Orchestration.
Ten tracks coming in at 33 minutes may not seem too long but the album is full of classic Beck tracks.

Black Kids - Partie Traumatic at the bargain price of Only £7.99.
The band, much hyped last year on blogs similar to this one, started life in 2000 as a Christian Ska Band. They have come a long way since then and in their own words '..we wanted to make an album that had 10 singles on it..' They may just have done it!

New Release CDs - Monday June 23rd

Last weekend I was lucky enough to get a couple of tickets, at the amazing price of just £6.00, for the Feeder - Silent Cry launch party at the Proud Gallery in Camden. I have seen them a couple of times on this launch tour, and all in nice small venues, but none as small as the Proud Gallery!
Duly ordered my copy of the Silent Cry Deluxe Version from CD WOW! which arrived on Monday morning, and it has been in my CD Player ever since. Great album guys!
And I have been listening to some other great new albums this week as well, all can be delivered free of charge from the lovely folk at CD WOW!

Sigur_ros_med_etcSigur Ros - Med Sud Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust
The fifth album release from the Icelandic band and follow up to 2005's Taak. Their most successful to date was recorded in New York City and co-produced by world renowned producer Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins et al). The title translates as 'with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly' but unlike previous offerings the opening track and first single 'Gobbledigook' rattles along at a fair upbeat pace and is all over in a mere three minutes!
Although some more traditional Sigur Ros tracks are to be found on the album like the 9 minute epic 'Festival' this is the most joyful and upbeat album to date, and even has a song recorded in English on it!
Listen to the full album at LastFM.com

Eliza_carthy_dreams_of_breathing_unEliza Carthy - Dreams Of Breathing Underwater shows that the most famous moderniser of folk music has no fear of experimentation on this her eighth solo album. The music runs across a range of styles from the straight 12 bar blues of opening track 'Follow The Dollar' on to the funereal 'Two Tears' and right on through to the 1920's swing band style of closing track 'Oranges and Seasalts'. Eliza's ability to mix it up is astounding, how she takes you through all of the changes without even noticing is a credit to her, and the listener, and makes you want to listen to the whole album again straight away. Check out some acoustic versions of songs from Dreams Of Breathing Underwater at Eliza-Carthy.com

CD Of The Week: Feeder - Silent Cry

Feeder_silent_cryFeeder - Silent Cry is also available as: Silent Cry (Deluxe Edition) - the 6th album from the Welsh indie-rock outfit.
Recorded and produced by the band themselves, with assistance from long time friend and once touring member Matt Sime. The album sees Grant Nicholas, Taka Hirose and Co. return to the sound that graced their early releases, Swim and Polythene.
Indeed recent dates to run the album out saw some early songs in the set. The album is the usual mix of heavy guitars and anthemic songwriting, while to my mind, creating their most accomplished recording to date.

Feeder_singlesHaving put the troubles of the past behind them (namely the untimely death of drummer Jon Lee, and the subsequent more dour but none the less excellent recording Yesterday Went Too Soon), Silent Cry sees the band back at their Arena filling rock anthem best.
Having been around since 1992 and with a string of 20, yes 20 Chart singles all of which on hearing are instantly recognisable. It is quite a miracle, or a cruel blow of fate whichever way you look at it that the band are not much more of a household name, perhaps it is the unassuming nature of Grant and Taka, perhaps the shadow cast by other stadium bands of the same era like Coldplay, but my feeling is it suits them!

First single 'We Are The People' seen here courtesy of YouTube...

... kicks the album off and will one day join the legion of other Feeder - Singles on another greatest hits album.
'Itsumo' has a great guitar hook, a little bit of reverb and echo on the vocals brings back the feeling of some early tracks but when everything kicks in you can see a small but significant step forwards.
'Miss You' rattles along at a pace that wouldn't put the Foo Fighters to shame and another great guitar riff is to be found on 'Tracing Lines'.

Feeder_echo_parkTitle track 'Silent Cry' starts and you think that you are in for the inevitable ballad but in the first minute you understand the format, soft bit, loud bit... and some more great guitar work.
'Fires' another big song with a big sound, and what's this? Some backing vocals....
'Heads Held High' a slow starter that builds, '8:18' a 'Buck Rogers' style track, 'Whos The Enemy', the short 'Space' and 'Into The Blue' are followed by the huge sound of 'Guided By A Voice' and it's great vocal hook. You can imagine the crowd at Reading Festival screaming along to this one!
And then the magnificent 'Sonorous' with it's massive crescendos finishes the album off, unless you have the Silent Cry (Deluxe Edition) in which case you get bonus tracks 'Yeah, Yeah' and 'Every Minute'.

Back to their best. If you get a chance to see them at a festival this year get yourself along, this album is Crying out (see what I did there? Clever eh?) for a huge sing along audience.
Alternatively an Autumn tour is planned with around 25 dates in a city near you!

New Release CDs - Monday June 16th

I have had a great few weeks recently and been to see some fabulous bands, I was hoping to get to see the Fleet Foxes last Tuesday but despite my best efforts I could not find a way in to the tiny Louisiana Pub in Bristol. But thank goodness there is always a constant source of great new music to listen to, always delivered direct to your very door totally free of charge from the lovely folk at CD WOW!

Dennis_wilson_pacific_ocean_blueDennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue: Legacy Edition (2CD)
*Unbelievably this is only GBP 8.99 for the 2CD... with free shipping!
The Beach Boys drummer's only solo release gets a very well deserved and luxuriously finished re-release. Regarded by many as the finest of the Beach Boys solo efforts, including his older brother Brian, this album is now presented with a clarity never before heard.
As an added bonus to hard core Beach Boys fans it also contains much of the material from the never released often lamented follow up Bambu.
Catch a quick overview of Dennis from this clip courtesy of YouTube:

And as if by magic, from the old to the new:

Fleet_foxes_fleet_foxesFleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
There has been so much underground buzz about this band that I would be surprised if there is anybody left out there that has not heard of them. Hailing from Seattle, the American city that spawned more quality bands than you can shake a stick at, and signed to the legendary Sub Pop label (in America) you might expect their music to be on the grunge side of rock, but none of it!
This is a very different sort of rock music described by the band themselves as "baroque harmonic pop jams".
From the Beach Boys like 'White Winter Hymnal' through to the Denver folkiness of 'Blue Ridge Mountains' the band derives inspiration from the greats of the 1960s US folk explosion, not quite sure how as they are all in their early 20s, but with a modernity specific to Fleet Foxes alone.
Check a few of the songs out at the Fleet Foxes My Space site.

Feeder_silent_cryFeeder - Silent Cry Is also available as - Silent Cry: Deluxe Edition
Feeder are one of my all time favourite bands!
I have followed them for many years from the Driftwood Spa pub in St Agnes to the Birmingham NEC and everywhere in-between. I have followed them through the highs and lows and have to say that to my mind this is one of the best albums that they have ever released.
I have been lucky enough to see a couple of the warm up shows at small venues and went to the album launch party last Thursday (more about that later this week!).
Outstanding tracks are the single 'We Are The People' the great 'Miss You', 'Itsumo', 'Guided By A Voice' and the fantastic 'Sonorous' back to their rocking best roots you would be a fool not to add this one to your collection!
Good post here from Drowned In Sound for all you nice people to read!!

CD Of The Week: Emmylou Harris - All I Intended To Be

Emmylou_harris_all_i_intended_to_be Emmylou Harris - All I Intended To Be
Nearly 40 years after her debut album Gliding Bird was released in 1969 she now has a sizable total of 21 studio albums tucked under her belt.
This effort sees her re-united once again with producer Brian Ahern who was at the helm of her first eleven albums, and sees the couple working together for the first time in 25 years.
This is her third release on Nonesuch records, and the first solo effort since 2003's Stumble Into Grace.

Tracy_chapman_crossroadsRecorded over a four year period at Ahern's Easter Island studio in Nashville this sees no difference to her style and sound, and why should it?
She has been and still is one of the worlds top Country artists and was honoured earlier this year with an induction into the Country Music Hall Of Fame along with such greats as Dolly Parton, who adds guest vocals to this record, Tammy Wynette and Brenda Lee.
Harris is first and foremost a shrewd collector and interpreter of other songwriters material, she locates the blue-collar tragedy in Mark Germino's 'Broken Man's Lament' with ease, and delivers Tracy Chapman's 'All That You Have Is Your Soul' as a more beautiful lesson.
Regardless of this, her own songs, particularly 'Sailing Round the Room' and 'Gold', show no shortfall in quality. Longtime friends Kate and Anna McGarrigle co-wrote and sing on two tracks, 'How She Could Sing the Wildwood Flower' and 'Sailing Round the Room'.

Emmylou_harris_cmaBoth the tempo and the subject matter for this album are downbeat, you might even class it as melancholy with tales of loss, ageing and death, she makes an art form of woe, she mourns lost love and agonises lost time, and is even heard singing a literal funeral song on the gently swaying 'Not Enough' a tale about a dead lover's burial.
But through all of this her wonderful soprano voice is swooping and swaying above the instruments. Musically a fitting release to coincide with her induction to the Country Music Hall Of Fame (picture on right from the ceremony) but lyrically a bit of a downer!

New Release CDs - Monday June 9th

I know I am always bleating on about the weather but it is June!
I've a light on as it is so dark, and I have broken out a hoodie to wear rather than put the heating back on... what is going on??
Thank goodness there is always a constant source of great new music to listen to, always delivered direct to your very door totally free of charge from the lovely folk at CD WOW!

Coldplay_viva_la_vidaColdplay - Viva La Vida Or Death & All His Friends
That's the full and correct title! It's also available as a Limited Gatefold Wallet Edition.
Well to be honest if you have not heard about this upcoming release you must have been in the Gobi Desert for the last three months!
Coldplay are going on tour in the US and Europe, they are playing free gigs, they have given the first single 'Violet Hill' with it's trademark piano hooks and heavy guitar edge away on their Coldplay Official Web Site they have been all over the radio, they are on TV with a new iTunes advert and are generally doing a very fine job of promoting this fine album themselves!
To give you an idea of how huge this album is the opening track 'Life In Technicolour' is an instrumental and could still be one of the best on the album. This is an album made by a band that believe in themselves at the height of their productivity. A must buy for any serious music lover.
For something a bit different listen to this short Coldplay: Viva La Vida Interview from YouTube.

Fratellis_here_we_standFratellis - Here We Stand
The Scottish trio burst into our musical vision in 2006 with their debut full length offering Costello Music, with it's cheesy cover and lovable pop/rock songs it sounded like a cross between Oasis and T Rex and spawned no less than four top 25 singles.
And, as if by magic the first single from this their sophomore new album, Here We Stand, called Mistress Mabel (seen here courtesy of YouTube), with a slightly rockier but none the less hook filled almost Beatles-like chorus hit #23 in the UK singles chart.
If anthemic sing along indie tunes with rock filled riffs are your scene, like The Kooks or The Kaiser Chiefs you're gonna love this one!!

CD Of The Week: Alphabeat - This Is Alphabeat

Alphabeat_this_is_alphabeatAlphabeat - This Is Alphabeat is the CD WOW! album of the week.

If you have heard their hit single 'Fascination' you could be forgiven in thinking that this debut album from the five piece Danish popsters has come right from the studios of Disney, a soundtrack to High School Musical.
However there is more to this album than meets the eye, or in this case ears! In a way this album heralds the return of pure Pop Music to the charts.

S_club_7 The band take great pleasure in honing in on their numerous and diverse musical talents, ranging from New Kids On The Block through the B-52's and on to S-Club 7, the hits just keep on coming, be they rollicking disco pop romps like 'Go Go' and 'Boyfriend' with it's touch of early Madonna, the Erasure style electro pop of 'Touch Me Touching You', the message of caution in 'Rubber Boots' or the more ballad style songs like 'What Is Happening' they are not a one horse outfit! This album even features a cover of PiL's Public Image!

When you learn that they have the same UK Management team as Mika who catapulted to the top of the charts last year it all starts to make sense.

Abba_definitive With ten pure pop songs, any of which could be a hit single in it's own right, this album has Pop quality but the modern appeal so needed to break into the charts and stay there. So, whether you are a younger listener who discovered music a few years ago through artists like Busted or Avril Lavigne, or an older fan of bands like ABBA and love to have a dance at the family disco's and have been looking for something new for the last umpteen years, this is the album for you. You won't have a problem dancing to this one, no sir!

With an album this uniquely crafted Alphabeat are on to a winner - it's their first greatest hits album and that's no joke!

Also comes as This Is Alphabeat - 2-CD Special Edition with the following tracks on the bonus CD:

  1. Boyfriend (Danish Version)
  2. Into The Jungle (Danish Version)
  3. A Message (B-side)
  4. Fascination (Live at Vega – CPH)
  5. Go-Go (Live at Vega – CPH)
  6. Boyfriend (Napster Live Session)

New Release CDs - Monday June 2nd

As I write the skies have gone black and it is as humid as hell. Another thunder storm on the way I think! So what better way to pass the afternoon than listen to a new album by the Modfather himself, Mr Paul Weller!

Paul_weller_22_dreamsPaul Weller - 22 Dreams
This is the ninth studio album from the former front man of two of Britain's most influential bands, The Jam and The Style Council.
The album was recorded at Wellers own Black Barn studio and was also co-produced by the man himself. Drawing from his three decades of musical output the album is a mixture of classic British Indie Rock in many of it's various styles, from the anthemic rock sing along of All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You) through the funkiness of Have You Made Up Your Mind and on to the ballad like Empty Ring, and the piano and voice of Invisible every track is different yet keyed around Wellers distinctive style and voice.
22 Dreams consists of 21 tracks, some of which are collaborations. The first double A-side single Echoes Around The Sun featured Noel Gallagher and Gem Archer from Oasis there are also guest appearances from Ocean Colour Scene's Steve Cradock and Blur guitarist Graham Coxon as well as former Stone Roses start Aziz Ibrahim. Echoes Around The Sun is seen here courtesy of YouTube;

Paul Weller - 22 Dreams also comes in a very special limited edition 2CD Deluxe Edition:

  • Paul_weller_deluuxeSecond CD:
  • 1. 22 Dreams [original demo]
  • 2. Rip The Pages Up
  • 3. Light Nights [original demo]
  • 4. Cold Moments [original demo]
  • 5. Love's Got Me Crazy
  • 6. Invisible [Marco version]
  • 7. Big Brass Buttons [instrumental]
  • 8. 22 Dreams [instrumental]
  • Special Packaging
  • Booklet

Zutons_you_can_do_anythingThe Zutons - You Can Do Anything
This is the third studio album from the band, coming just over two years after Tired Of Hanging Around the album that paid off their mortgages when a certain Ms Amy Winehouse covered their song Valerie! Nice, very nice!
The ska'd up rhythms are as prevalent as ever, the retro riffs and the sax are still in there, the poptastic chorus are sung with gusto, but as was the case previously there is some seriously jacked off lyrics going on, pick them up on What's Your Problem, an ode to violence, Family Of Leeches about our modern day scrounging society and Freak, a tale about Rent Boys, not so happy-go-lucky pop tune as you first thought eh?
This time perhaps they will not spawn a Valerie, however first single Always Right Behind You video on YouTube) is as good a pop song as you can get, with it's fab slide guitar work, even if it is about keeping your eye on those friends of yours that would slag you off behind your back!

CD Of The Week: The Futureheads - This Is Not The World

Futureheads_this_is_not_the_worldThe Futureheads – This Is Not The World
This album comes after a difficult period for the band, dumped by their record label after reportedly poor sales of their second album News And Tributes it could have been easy for them to drop by the wayside like so many other promising bands have after being dropped. But the Futureheads decided to take fate into their own hands and created their own record label, NUL Records, on which this, their third album appears.

Like so many other albums I have reviewed lately the band took themselves off abroad, this time to Spain, where they recorded the album at the studio of producer Youth. It would have been an easy mistake to be too cautious, and worry too much about the final outcome of the debut record on their own label but the Futureheads were having none of it. Full of songs that have a very definite structure and anthems that pay tribute to their post punk revivalism the set starts at a pace and hardly falters.

Ruts_best_ofReminiscent of some of the best bands of the late 1970’s, The Ruts, and The Skids spring to mind, a bit of early Clash or The Undertones, and even The Jam. I guess you might say that this has of course all been done before, not quite as raw as those earlier bands but if you liked them, you will love this!

You can take a preview listen to the whole album at the Futureheads Myspace page.

    New Release CD's - Monday May 26th

    Spiritualized_songs_in_aeSpiritualized - Songs In A & E
This is also available as a Limited Edition with special packaging. It's the first all new material release from the band since 2003's Amazing Grace, and is the sixth studio release from a band whose only constant member is Jason Pierce, AKA J. Spaceman.
The album consists of 18 different instrumental and vocal tracks, with the different parts of the album being interspersed with six different harmony interludes.
    J. Spaceman has recently written the score for the new Harmony Korine film, Mister Lonely, so it comes as no surprise that the album also contains a duet with Harmony's wife Rachel 'Don't Hold Me Close'. The music is full of dark overtones and lyrics relating to mortality but with the usual flair is an uplifting listen.
This will please long time fans, but if you are new to the band, take a listen... you will be pleasantly surprised! Take a preview of the whole album at Spiritualized MySpace page!

    Pigeon_detectives_emergencyPigeon Detectives - Emergency
It's that 'dreaded' second release from a band that brought us
