New Release DVDs - Monday June 23rd

I'm usually too busy watching DVDs but a few nights ago I went along to my local cinema and took the chance to see the new Indiana Jones. A classic film in the series, so far fetched it is almost believable! And I sure hope I get to look as good as Harrison Ford does when I am pushing retirement age!
Anyway back to reality for a while, I had better review a couple of DVDs up for release Monday, June 23rd.
As always, they are available from CD WOW! with totally free delivery!

Rambo_2007Rambo 2007
Talking about looking good for your age! Sylvester Stallone hasn't worn too badly either, although he was never a good looking chap in the first place! You would think that he would be totally nuts after all the beatings he had in the Rocky films, well perhaps he is!
In this latest Rambo episode he reluctantly agrees to escort a group of Christian Aid Workers up the Salween River to deliver much needed food and medical supplies to the Karen Tribe. Two weeks later a pastor arrives with the news that the nice Christian folk have not returned and no one will help find them, what a surprise!
You know what happens next? Old John Rambo joins with a group of mercenaries and swans off up the river to rescue the aforementioned missionaries. Mayhem of course ensues...

Rambo IV: Full High Quality Trailer here for you viewing pleasure, it's a bit gory mind so not for the faint hearted! Love those YouTube folks!

PenelopePenelope (Christina Ricci) however is not so lucky!
At a very young age she is born into a family cursed generations ago by a witch. The curse laid upon the family said that the next girl to be born would have the face of a pig! Poor young Penelope happens to be that very girl, and the curse becomes truth, she is born with a porcine visage.
The curse, it is said, can only be lifted by 'one who loves her'. Hidden away by her parents she immerses herself in intellectual pursuits. Now an adult Penelope's parents try to introduce her to a variety of rich suitors hoping that one will fall in love with her and break the curse, as if!
Now if that is not enough sadness for her one of them teams up with a reporter to try and get a photo of Penelope for distribution to the press. The shame of them! They recruit Johnny (James McAvoy) to help but as in all good tales..
A great Penelope post here from Agent Lover...

New Release DVDs - Monday June 16th

It's as hot as hell today, and I for one am not complaining! I have a relatively quite night tonight and intend to spend it with a cold beer in a nice country pub garden somewhere. But before I get a chance to do that I had better review a couple of DVDs up for release next week, Monday 16th June.
As always, they are available from CD WOW! with totally free delivery!

JumperJumper (2008)
Based on Stephen Gould's critically acclaimed book Jumper is the story of David. Imagine, you are able to teleport yourself to any destination by sheer imagination, what fun could you have?
Well David (Hayden Christensen) uses his special powers to make himself shed loads of money in a not too Robin Hood kind of a way by Jumping in and out of bank vaults! Not content with this he then fixates upon his childhood sweetheart Millie (Rachel Bilson) and pursues her.
Just when you think the movie will drop into a romance in jumps (get the pun there?) Griffin (Jamie Bell), a fellow Jumper, and both are pursued relentlessly by the formidable Paladins, led by the excellent Roland (Samuel L Jackson).
I love Jackson and frankly anything he is in has to be worth watching! If you liked Cloverfield, National Treasure 2 or I Am Legend, all recently reviewed on this very space by yours truly, you may well enjoy this film.
Check the Official Jumper Trailer out from the ever so nice folk at YouTube:

Peep_show_5Peep Show: Series 5
I can't stop myself and have to say it, this is the DVD release of the guess what? Yep, fifth season of the BAFTA Award winning TV series Peep Show.
Originally hitting our TV screens in 2003 a sixth series has now been commissioned.
The show continues the winning formula following the often sexually frustrated and always complicated lives of Mark and Jeremy, but what makes the programme really interesting is the first person application, cameras are often strapped to the actors heads in order to give their perspective and their inner thoughts are expressed as voice overs. Indeed even in shots of the two main characters the camera is placed as a third person's perspective.
This series of the hugely popular not PC show starts with Mark and Jeremy returning from Mark's honeymoon in Mauritius and into the aftermath of his wedding day 'jilting'. As Mark is thrown reluctantly back into the dating scene, with predictably cringe-worthy results, Jeremy's lack of cash sees him turning back to his mother...
Read a great post from KingBobbySix if you want a more in depth synopsis of the plot!

DVD Of The Week: Cloverfield

Cloverfield_2Cloverfield is the DVD of the Week on CD WOW!
I remember seeing the trailer for this for the first time and was instantly intrigued. Starting off as a goodbye party, Hud takes hold of a video camera to record the evenings events.
Rob argues with his ex Beth, whom he still loves and she storms off home. Things take a turn for the worse when a sudden power cut is followed by an Earth tremor, huge explosions and a fireball follow and moments later the head of the Statue Of Liberty falls to the street. WOW!

There is debate that a terrorist attack may be taking place but it soon becomes apparent that there is a huge monster attacking the city. Beth calls, she is injured and trapped in her apartment the other side of the city. Rob and three of his friends, including Hud and camera, set off across the city to rescue her.

The film follows the friends in their various attempts to rescue Beth, and consists almost entirely of footage shot with the hand held camera.
Of course this technique has been used before - The Blair Witch Project anybody??

A great thriller, watch the Official Movie Trailer from YouTube and see if you can avoid the temptation to watch the whole film, I know I couldn't!

New Release DVDs - Monday June 9th

After a long weekend of gigs I have a well earned rest tonight before a trip to London tomorrow to see Mike B's birthday gig at the 12-Bar Club, so what better excuse to review a couple of DVDs up for release next week, Monday 9th June. They are all available from CD WOW! with totally free delivery!

JunoJuno
Macguff (Ellen Page) is a 16 year old eccentric tomboy schoolgirl when she discovers that she has become pregnant by her one and only chair-bound sexual encounter with sort of boyfriend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera).
Although her initial decision is to have an abortion a last minute change of mind, brought about partly by her school friend Su Chin who is on lone protest outside the clinic, and the smell of the clinic itself, puts her off and she decides to go to term and have the baby adopted, this of course means telling her parents...
Similar in style, although to my mind much funnier than Knocked Up, the film relies heavily on the relationship between the characters, Ellen Page in particular shines and proves that her acclaimed debut performance in Hard Candy was no flash in the pan! Has some fairly explicit discussion about sexual activity in the first third, hence the '15' certificate. See the official Juno Trailer here courtesy of YouTube.

Curb_your_enthusiasmCurb Your Enthusiasm: Complete Season 6
The sixth series of the extremely popular TV series. Originally penned as a one off show called Larry David: Curb Your Enthusiasm, the series was born through public demand. Shot on location, as one off takes, with hand held cameras the production is unusual in as much as the actors have no script but rather an outline of the scenario from which they improvise dialogue.
The show is set in Santa Monica and loosely based on David's life after Seinfeld as a semi retired multi millionaire. Fans of the show will be relieved that this series seems right back on track after the attempts at finding his roots in season 5 for many backfired.
A nice post here from Broadcastingcable.com with a trailer to watch as well!

DVD Of The Week: No Country For Old Men

No_country_for_old_menNo Country For Old Men
This really is a top film, based on the book by Cormac McCarthy. The Coen brothers (Ethan and Joel) have done an astonishing job of faithfully following the book.

Set along the United States / Mexico border in 1980 the story follows three principle characters, Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) who comes across a scattered crime scene, the remains of a drug money swap that has gone horribly wrong. Previous to this moment Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) has already come across the scene, realising a possible opportunity he calmly walks off with $2million in cash.
Of course this event is not without consequence and the calm cold and eerie Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) comes to retrieve the lost property, and with Anton your very life could depend on the flip of a coin!

No_country_picViolence and Mayhem erupt in the ensuing cat and mouse drama as the paths of the three men criss cross each other. Enthralling, although some of the threads are never satisfactorily concluded, a possible sequel?
The film is more about the three central characters then the story line, Anton could be from a Tarantino film, Moss is no pushover either being a Vietnam Vet and the Sheriff all interact brilliantly.

Having been nominated for, and won many honours: 3 BAFTA's, 2 Golden Globes and 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director this film not only pleased the critics but was a huge box office success as well.

Special Features:

  • The Making of No Country For Old Men
  • Working with The Coens
  • Diary Of A Country Sheriff

If you have liked any of the Coen Brothers previous efforts like Fargo or Blood Simple you will love this film. If not check all three of them out!!

New Release DVDs - Monday June 2nd

I have been in Wales for a couple of days, and as is typical of a bank holiday / half term week it poured with rain the entire time, please don't tell me that Summer is over already! I couldn't stand it.
So for these long wet evenings why not settle down with a new release DVD from CD WOW! and a nice cup of cocoa...

National_treasures_book_of_secretsNational Treasure 2 - Book Of Secrets
This is the adventure filled sequel to the 2004 Disney film National Treasure and is again produced by Jon Turteltaub.
The whole crew are back with the same actors and characters as the original joined by Helen Mirren and Ed Harris.
18 Pages are missing from the diary of John Wilkes Booth, Abraham Lincolns assassin. One of the pages has been discovered by Jeb Wilkinson (Ed Harris) and he offers it as proof that Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) relative was a conspirator and not a hero. Ben sets out on an adventure to clear his family name that leads him through Paris, Buckingham Palace, The White House and on to Mount Rushmore in a hunt for clues that leads to a secret that nobody wants to hear or believe. A great fun film suitable for all the family.

DVD Of The Week: In The Valley Of Elah

Valley_of_elahIn The Valley Of Elah is a film loosely based on the true story of American war veteran Richard Davis who was murdered on his return home from the Iraq War in 2003.
Directed by Paul Haggis who was responsible for the excellent Crash and starring three academy award winners the film itself has been nominated for an award.

Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones) gets the phone call that every Father who has a son in the army dreads, 'your son is missing'. The big difference here is that his son is at home in the U.S. on leave after a tour of duty in Baghdad. Facing what appears to be Military indifference to the issue Hank takes it upon himself to investigate the disappearance.

With the reluctant help of Police Detective Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron) he takes on the task of discovering the truth. The journey of discovery takes many twists and turns and the suspense is kept high throughout as they come up against the closed ranks of the military and the harsh realities of modern day warfare.

Here is the official film trailer from those good folk at YouTube:

The Valley of Elah by the way was where biblical hero David met and defeated Goliath, every day for 40 days Goliath went into the Valley of Elah and challenged the Kings best warriors, but no one would fight him, until a boy, David, delivering the bread faced him with just seven smooth stones. And this is indeed a story of David facing Goliath.....

This Optimum Edition comes with these Special Features:

  • Featurette: After Iraq
  • Featurette: Coming Home
  • Interview With Paul Haggis
  • Additional Scenes
  • Trailer

New Release DVDs - Monday May 26th

I normally try to keep the DVD new releases to film or television but this week sees a music DVD at the very top of the Pre-Sales list so it couldn't be ignored.
Of course I have also found a great TV series and some excellent highlights that you can see further on down the page...

Genesis_when_in_romeGenesis - When In Rome - Live 2007
Any Genesis fan worth their salt will know about this concert. Taking place at the end of their 2007 Turn It On Again re-union tour, two dates in Austria and the Czech Republic had to be re-scheduled to accommodate the new date at the Circo Massimo in Rome.

Announced as a free show a crowd of 400,000 people was expected, in the event estimates put the crowd at over half a million! This is the DVD of the entire concert, bar a mistake during Firth Of Fifth which has been overdubbed, a shame if you ask me as mistakes often make the night more memorable!
Performing together for the first time in 15 years the guys run through some fantastic tracks, Turn It On Again and I Can't Dance, and some favourites of mine, I Know What I Like, Los Endos (video Clip from Italia 1 courtesy of YouTube) and The Carpet Crawlers.
Fantastic, a must for all Genesis fans, lovers of prog rock old and new, and anyone else with the slightest interest in good music!

Weeds_season_3Weeds - Season 3
OK, so this is stating the obvious but this is the third season of the fantastic Showtime hit TV series on DVD.
If you are new to the series then you can pick up loads of info from the Official Weeds Web Site. To the outside world, Nancy Botwin appears to be an average mom still recovering from the death of her husband. But making a living as a single mom is tough, so Nancy does the most logical thing... and becomes a pot dealer.
Surrounded by her cannabis-craving accountant, her scheming friend, and her slacker brother-in-law, Nancy attempts to support her family without arousing suspicion from the cops or her neighbours.
Season 3 picks up with several subplots involving the fallout from the botched drug deal of the season two finale.

DVD Of The Week: Sweeny Todd - Demon Barber Of Fleet Street

Sweeny_todd Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street
This is the film version of the Broadway musical written by Stephen Sondheim, directed by the brilliant Tim Burton (Nightmare Before Christmas) who brings his typical dark Gothic style to the production.

The musical was based on the 19th Century legend of Sweeney Todd, who has been traced back to a real life barber!
A man wronged by villainous Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), Sweeney Todd, played by long time collaborator of Burton's Johnny Depp, returns to London after being sent to prison, unjustly, by the Judge.

Sweeney opens a barber shop and vows to get his revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. We follow him as he starts to extract his revenge after the appealing Mrs Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), Sweeney's amorous accomplice, takes the shop next door. She's not too fussy about what meat she puts in her pies and soon she gets the reputation of selling "the worst pies in London."
With the help of Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney tries to rid the world of all the people who have ever done him wrong and hopes to be reunited with his daughter, Joanna, who is now Judge Turpin's ward.

Here is the official Film Trailer, courtesy of the nice people at YouTube;

For those of you who didn't know this is a full on musical, and Depp does a good job in the lead role. Fans of Broadway and Sondheim should relish this new adaptation and fans of Burton and Depp will be surprised at how much they like the musical style.
This film is not for the squeamish, it is full of gore, but none the less it is wholly appropriate for the story.

This Special Edition comes with these stunning extra Features:

  • Behind the scenes featuring: Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter
  • Musical Mayhem: Sondheim's Sweeney Todd
  • Sweeney Todd is Alive: The Real History of the Demon Barber
  • Sweeney's London
  • Recreating Fleet Street
  • Grand Guinol: A Theatrical Tradition
  • Sketchbook (a look at the creation of sketches of the story)

New Release DVDs - Monday, May 19th

Do you remember when summer was about three months long, and every day was sunny, you could go out on your bike in the morning and just go home for food? That is what today feels like, the sun is out and the birds are all singing, and I have a few DVDs to review so I must get on! Here are the top selling upcoming DVDs due for release next Monday. Enjoy!

Bee_movie Bee Movie
A great film about Barry B Benson (Jerry Seinfeld). Barry is no ordinary Bee of course, he wants to explore the whole world outside of the hive, so upon graduation from Bee college Barry becomes a pollen jock, the only job in the hive that will take him outside and on to his adventure.
When Barry's life is saved by a Human, Vanessa (Renee Zellweger), he breaks the most sacred of Bee laws, and talks to her!
This is one of those great films that will appeal to adults and children alike, full of innuendo, one liners, double meanings and general slapstick comedy it will have you laughing from beginning to end!
I had to rewind a couple of times when I was laughing so much I missed some equally funny pieces! But none the less has a serious message about the qualities of doing even a menial job well, and the power of working together as a team to reach a goal...

DVD Of The Week: Alien Vs Predator: Requiem

Alien_vs_predator_requiem Alien Vs Predator: Requiem is this weeks DVD of the week!
I can't believe that there is anyone out there that does not know the history of these two races, but let me fill you in just in case....

The Aliens were created by the Predators as an enemy worthy of battle in their rite to passage. 2004's Alien Vs Predator was set in remote Antarctica and therefore left most of the Human race unaware of what was happening, and was criticised by many as being too mild for a film of such epic battle proportions.

The sequel, does not suffer in the same way, and the DVD has seven minutes of extra footage that was deemed too extreme for the cinema, nice!
Set immediately after the end of the first film, the Predator ship is leaving earth when a chest burster erupts from the dead Predators body, in the ensuing fight a Predator fires at the hybrid PredAlian and the ship is holed and crashes to Earth in the Colorado Woods, the PredAlian and some facehuggers escape. In the meantime the ship has sent a distress signal which is responded too, as is there want, by a single Predator... mayhem ensues!

This, special edition, is chock full of Special Features:

  • Commentary with Directors Colin and Greg Strause and Producer John Davis
  • Commentary by Special Effects Designers Tom Woodruff and Alec Gillis
  • Prepare for war and Fight to the finish Featurette

New Release DVDs - Monday May 12th

Here we go with this weeks selection of new release DVDs;

Ps_i_love_you P.S. I Love You
The movie adaptation of the book by Cecilia Ahern and stars Hilary Swank as Holly Kennedy, married and devoted to the love of her life, Gerry (Gerard Butler). Gerry's life is taken by a sudden illness and this sucks the life from Holly too. End of story you might think, but no!!

Gerry has planned ahead and, before he died, written many letters to Holly that will guide her, not only through her grief, but also in rediscovering herself. These are delivered by different means and at times that are least expected, the first arrives, with a cake, on her 30th birthday and a message to go out and celebrate. Each is signed off with P.S. I Love You!
A touchingly told story and some great acting make this a chick flick to watch!
Official trailer for 'P.S. I Love You' shown here courtesy of our friends at YouTube.

American_dad_season_3 American Dad: Season Three
This is of course the DVD release of the third series of TV animated series American Dad, created by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.
The show centres on Stan Smith, the head of the Smith household and diligent employee of the CIA... they live in Langley Falls, Langley being where the real life headquarters of the CIA are located.
Stan will go to any extreme to protect his beloved America from harm, as witnessed by the terror alert code on his fridge, and his regular shooting of the family toaster whenever it pops up! The show is both topical, as seen in the opening sequence of each episode which features a Newspaper Headline of a current affair, and satirical. A typical headline being: 'Israel pulls out of Gaza, Gaza not pregnant'.
For fans of Family Guy, The Simpsons and King Of The Hill!! Here is a great post from UnderGroundOnline.

DVD Of The Week - Skins: Complete Series 2

Skins_series_2 Skins: Complete Series 2 does exactly what it says on the tin, well, it's a DVD box actually.
Fans of the cult TV series who will no doubt already own series 1, have a pre-order in for series 2 and be avidly waiting for series 3 due to screen in 2009.

However for the uninitiated here is a brief view of what you will be getting: Skins is a BAFTA award nominated British teen drama. However, although based on teenage characters and aimed at a teenage audience the content of the show is strictly adult in nature. And although freely available to view on national television the DVD set has attracted an 18 certificate.

The show is fast paced and full of angst ridden fun. Series 2 follows the lives of the eleven teens from fictitious Roundview Sixth Form College in Bristol introduced to us in series 1, as they struggle with such highly charged issues as race, religion, sexuality, drugs and food disorders, much as in real life itself.

Where most of the episodes in series 1 concentrated on a single character, series 2 is more in soap opera format with the stories revolving around many of the central characters and looping through several episodes.
Expect plenty of bitching, backstabbing and general bad behaviour in this raunchy and all too realistic portrayal of teenage life in what could be any major city in the UK.
Here is the first part of episode 1 to give you an idea of what you are letting yourselves in for, from our friends at YouTube, but beware, it's very addictive!!

New Release DVDs - Monday May 5th

I watched Casino Royale last night. Now it may seem a bit odd but I just never got round to it before now, the point is, we went out for a walk after tea to the local pub, had a pint and when we got home, nothing of note to watch on the telly, so we broke out a few unwatched DVDs and plumped for the above. Have to say it's a great film, not your average Bond movie but a darker and deeper portrayal. A great watch, and a great buy at just £7.99 with free delivery. So, on to this weeks selection for your comments:

Charlie_wilsons_warCharlie Wilson's War
Perhaps one of the most extraordinary stories ever told, and my friends it is all true!
Based on the Playboy US Congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) who conspired with CIA operative Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and the beautiful Houston socialite Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts) in one of the biggest covert operations that has ever been uncovered (I am sure there are many others that we will one day find out about, but that is a post for another day!).
Among other things they managed to increase the CIA's anti-communism budget from just $5million to over $500million. This is a great portrayal of their efforts which ultimately contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union as it was then, and the end of the cold war, with consequences that still reverberate around the world today.
Here is the official Charlie Wilson's War movie trailer from the good ol' guys at YouTube.
Hey, it's got Jimi Hendrix on the soundtrack as well so got to be worth a look just for that!

Ashes_to_ashesAshes To Ashes (Complete BBC Series 1)
This is the sequel to the second series of Life On Mars, and sees erstwhile DCI Gene Hunt swap his Ford Cortina for an Audi Quatro, roll up his sleeves and take on the 80s.
No longer the self styled sheriff of Manchester, Gene turns his attention to taking on the Southern nancy-boy criminals of good old London Town. He does not however expect to be thrown together with the sexy intelligent DCI Alex Drake.
Her rise through the ranks of the Met is only thwarted when, in 2008, during a brave attempt at escape from her daughters kidnappers a terrible accident occurs. Alex wakes to find herself in 1981 interacting with familiar characters and opposite the arrogant Hunt, but her in depth knowledge of the case he is on must surely be of an advantage.
Great twist on the good old TV cops and robbers series that we have come to love so much. Here is an Ashes To Ashes trailer posted by the BBC on YouTube.
